Nau Ooon love the water and she listens very well to her mahout. I notice she has rope around her belly. Does this mean she is in taxi service? How old is she? I don’t think she is fully grown is she?

    • Hi Karen,
You had enquired a few times about the rope around the elephants. I noticed the ropes for the first time last year. My understanding when I last visited is that they added the rope for added security for the mahout program participants. The rider can grab on to it to maintain balance, especially when going down inclines or for assurance. I saw a couple participants utilizing them.
If you are a repeat participant, then it is unlikely they would add the rope for your visit. I am sure you can request to add it or omit it.

Supat, keep up the good work with the postings! Hope to see you next year.

That would make sense. I have been going for six years now and have had Wanalee every year. This will be my seventh year. I must admit the first time coming down the forest trail was interesting. I had no idea how to balance, but Wanalee is excellent, she would hold her ears back and secure the calves of my legs to her neck. She knows when you are tense, she knows when you are unsure, she is very smart. After the first time however, you begin to get the feel of the elephant, the way they move, their cadence and you go with it. Relaxing is important.

This video just made me think of something – do the elephants understand any English commands or words?

    • Karen Andersen says:

Elephants, all elephants, understand the language of love. No words are necessary really. If they don’t want to listen, it doesn’t matter what language you use. But they always, but always, listen to their main mahout. Second mahouts, not so much.

  3. Thank Karen for helping me to reply the comments of elephant lovers..

Supat, I don’t know half of what you know. I am just a beginner. You have so many answers. I just know what I have experienced. Thank you.
